Common Canine Attitudes
1) There must be something in it for me attitude. This type of dog knows how to sit (lay, stay etc.) but won't do it unless there is a treat
2) The maybe there is something in it for me dog. This type of dog is looking for any type of reward praise, food or attention. The most common complaint from the owner is "I have tried everything and my dog still jumps" The problem is the dog has learned he will be rewarded eventually if he is persistent (remember a pat on the head is a reward)
3) The if I don't do it I will be reprimanded dog. This type of dog will do what you want but only because they are scared of what will happen if they don't. You can see this by the dog being stressed during training. This can even cause some dogs to become aggressive.
4) The are you gonna make me dog. A very common type of attitude that comes in three basic forms. The first form is the dog that looks at you too see if you are going to make an effort to follow up on your command. The second form is the drama dog that acts as though you are going to hurt it (this animal has learned that if they act scared you stop what you are doing) The third form is the dog that challenges back with a make me I dare you attitude.
